Improving Middle School ELA & Math Instruction through a Teacher Coaching Network

Welcome to the school application for the Middle School Improvement Network in Massachusetts!

Before applying, read the overview document in full. You will need to gather the following information to submit in the application:

  • Basic contact and demographic information about the school.
  • A decision to apply for one subject or two subjects (ELA, math, or both) and information about the school team members, including Content Coach(es), Teacher Leader(s), and principal.
  • An understanding of how this Network will support your instructional efforts.
  • Contracting details if your school is selected to participate in the Network.
  • An agreement to the school commitments outlined in the overview document.

Content Coach Minimum Qualifications

  • Deep knowledge of middle grades ELA or math content and instructional practices
  • At least 3 years of experience as a middle grades ELA or math teacher, with a record of student achievement success
  • At least 2 years of experience working with adults in an instructional support capacity and an understanding of how adults learn
  • Enthusiastic about giving and receiving feedback and helping others to learn and grow
  • We seek a diverse cohort of Content Coaches. As you consider your coach nominations, consider the overall diversity of the cohort, which should meet or exceed the diversity of your student population.

Teacher Leader Qualifications

  • Deep knowledge of middle grades ELA or math content and instructional practices
  • At least 3 years of experience as a middle grades ELA or math teacher, with a record of student achievement success
  • Some experience working with adults in an instructional support capacity and an interest in pursuing coach or leadership opportunities

Commitment to Diversity

While all educators play an important role in giving students access to a rigorous education, teachers and leaders of color give students of color vital role models and bring critical perspective to decision making and leadership. When choosing a Coach or Teacher Leader to join the Middle School Improvement Network, consider choosing a coach or an aspiring teacher leader of color to join the cohort. The diversity of the school team should ideally meet or exceed the diversity of your student population.

Next Steps

  1. Complete the school application by clicking the “APPLY HERE” button below. After completing and submitting the application, you will have the option to return to your application and edit your responses at a later date. School applications are due by Thursday, March 1, 2018.
  2. School applications will be reviewed by a team from Instruction Partners and UnboundEd against a rubric. The broad categories for evaluation will include:
    • Overall alignment and integration of this Network with current work of the school
    • Clear and concrete plan for professional development of teachers
    • Diversity of the school team
    • Plans to utilize the Teacher Leader and expand their leadership opportunities
    • The role of the Content Coach and their work with teachers
  3. Schools will be notified of their acceptance status by April 11, 2018.
